World Health Day 2007

MUNA observed world Health Day on Monday 9th April 2007 at Godrej Bhawan at 5:30PM.

The Theme was given by WHO “International Health Security, Invest in health and build a safer future.”

The speakers were Dr. Nilima Kshirsager Dean KEM Hospital and G.S Medical College Parel, Dr. Rukhsana Ayaz, physiatrist & Director - Dr. Matcheswala Councelling Centre, Mrs.Kunica Sadanand Lall – Film Actress and activist HIV/Aids awareness, and Mr. Ram Niwas Mirdhaji – President IFUNA from New Delhi.

Mr. Ram Niwas Mirdha presided over the function; it was attended by important dignitaries from the diplomatic corps and different personalities from the city including those from Mumbai Municipal Corporation and Industries. There was also a good sizable response from the youth and the student community of Mumbai. The theme of the World Health Day was introduced by Mrs. Pheroza J. Godrej – President MUNA, Mrs. Mohini Mathur – Executive Chairperson read the message delivered for the occasion from the Regional Director General – WHO.

The Rukhsan Ayaz spoke on Emergencies in Psychiatry like Drugs and Substance Abuse, Sex Abuse, Alcoholism, Gambling, Suicidal Tendencies, Schizophrenia, Depression, Bipolar Cases. Besides the Medical Drug Therapy, she stressed the importance of empathisation, dignity, and respect alonwith counseling, social support and their rehabilitation into society.

Mrs. Kunika Lall Spoke on the awareness of HIV/AIDS programmes in Mumbai and also emphasis on the physiological aspects of the diseases besides the treatment resulted in the decrease in the new cases from 6 % to 2.1% in the last decade. Besides the increase in the allocation of budgetary provisions for HIV/AIDS by the Government.

Dr. Nilima Kshirsager elaborated on the introduction of newer diseases from the animals into Humans like Aveian Flu, Ebiola Virus, Sars, HIV and the resurgent of Malaria etc.She also spoke on the Disaster Management Programmes in Mumbai during the floods of July 2005 and the Train Blast of 7th July 2006. She said that the youth and the community at large had helped in transporting the victims to the hospitals much faster as compared to other cities which has suffered the similar disasters around the world, to help to provide the people with medicines and first aid the comparative data of surgical emergencies between Mumbai and London Train Blast and post deluge diseases like Leptospirois between Mumbai and Rio Di Genaro was also presented.

Mr. Ram Niwas Mirdha gave the presidential address and appreciated the effort of MUNA and requested the President to propagate the given theme of the year in the state of Maharashtra.

Lastly, it was the sprit of Mumbaikars which brought back Mumbai on its own feet within the few days of such disaster.

Flowers were presented to the speakers by Mr. Zakaulla Siddiqui, Dr. Chainani and Mr. Ashraf Ahmed Shaikh circulated the visitors’ book for signatures.

Refreshments were served after the formal programme.
