MODEL UNITED NATIONS ASSEMBLY, MUMBAI 2015

Maharashtra United Nations Association (MUNA) joined hands with Rotaract District Organization, R.I.D. 3140, Rotary Club of Bombay Pier and Rotaract club of SIES Sion (West) to host and organize the Model United Nations Assembly at Amulakh Amichand Bhimji Vividhlakshi Vidyalaya at Matunga on 8th February ,2015 from 9:30 am to 6.00 pm.

The resolution being debated at the Model UN Assembly was “Territorial Integrity of Ukraine;”

Rotaract is a Rotary-sponsored service club for young men and women ages 18 to 30. Rotaract clubs are either community or university based, and they’re sponsored by a local Rotary club. As one of Rotary’s most significant and fastest-growing service programs, with more than 8,400 clubs in about 170 countries and geographical areas, Rotaract has become a worldwide phenomenon.

MUNA or Model United Nations Assembly is a mock General Assembly of the United Nations. An agenda will be provided and discussions between nations will ensue to pass a resolution of global importance.

Model United Nations was an one day event where an actual UN resolution was discussed as compared to other places where a resolution is created from scratch.

The procedure was simple which was created by modifying Harvard MUN procedure. It was done in such a way that it becomes implementable in a single day.

Amendments were incorporated in the resolution only if they pass 2/3rd of the majority count.

During voting, the countries wishing to deviate and change from their original voting preferences in the UN were given the chance to vote ‘Yes or No with rights’ . They were given a timeslot to explain the reason for the change in their stance.

The program was graced by dignitaries from Rotary and Rotract Club District Governor Ajay Gupta , diplomats, DRR Rtr. Hemang Jakhia , Rtn Sailesh Bhatia,Ms. KavitaMundkur Nigam , and from Maharashtra United Nations Association (MUNA) Ms. Mohini Mathur – Executive Chairperson, Maharashtra United Nations Association, Mr. A.A.Syed – Secretary General, Maharashtra United Nations Association, and Mr. Ashraf Ahmed Shaikh – Hon. Secretary Maharashtra United Nations Association and President of its Youth Wing, who motivated and congratulated the young participants for taking this initiative and to participate in this event.

The Model United Nations Session was chaired by Rtn. Pankaj Phatarphod with Ms. Siddhi Parikh as the Deputy Secretary General.

The 1st part of the session saw the Youth delivering their foreign policy statements as diplomats. It was a truly exhilarating experience to see the participants dressed in the traditional attire of the country they were representing.

The post break session saw a very heated discussion on the amendments to the resolution presented by the delegates during the lunch break.

The session saw about 93 participants representing 35 countries from various Rotaract clubs across Mumbai, with the total count of all the people who attended and organized the Assembly being at around 179.

The session concluded with the prize distribution ceremony. The judges and the executive board committee members of the Model UN Assembly spoke to the participants about developing there negotiating skills and becoming better diplomats.
